Jeffree Star is an androgynous, LA-based musician who rose to fame during through MySpace. He’s also a make up artist working in California. When it comes to indie makeup brands, his cosmetics line is one of the most popular lines on social media. I got introduced to his makeup through Instagram, after doing research on better alternatives to Lime Crime – a brand that has some unique colors but a lot of bad juju surrounding it.
Jeffree Star Cosmetics has Velour Liquid Lipsticks and Velour Lip Scrubs currently available. A liquid lipstick is a product that goes on like a gloss but dries matte, like a lipstick. I purchased two of his colors – Unicorn Blood and Prom Night. They run $18 a piece.
Unicorn Blood – The color of Unicorn Blood is very similar to Kat Von D’s Studded Kiss Lipstick in Motorhead. Unicorn Blood has more of a mahogany color and less red undertones than the Kat Von D shade, however. I dig it. I did notice a licorice-like smell when I opened the tube, not that I minded all that much. This product takes a while to dry, and it lasted through the night of drinking and appetizer eating.
Prom Night – This is a very in-your-face pink color. I love it. I didn’t feel like it was obnoxious while wearing it, which pinks can somehow look, especially if you don’t have doll white skin. This shade’s color lasted much longer than Unicorn Blood, for sure. Well into the next day, in fact. The only lip color that could rival this in shade and longevity was Revlon’s Ultimate Suede in Muse.
Jeffree Star Cosmetics is available online only at http://www.jeffreestarcosmetics.com/. A line of highlighters called Skin Frost will launch in Spring 2016 along with a stick lipstick called Lip Ammunition, according to their Instagram page.
